Hi - a few answers ...
- do I need to have a picture or sample of what I want made?
Before I go I cut pictures out of catalogues / off the internet / fashion magazines until I have a catalogue of what I want made :-)
- do I have to bring fabric?
It depends what you want made .. if its skirt / trouser / suit type fabric most tailors have a good selection. Its the same for evening fabrics - if they dont have it they can get it or you can go to Alta Moda who have a large selection. However if its something specific / or a special colour Id bring it with you.
- will they make all sizes (I am on the cuddly side)?
Yes - they will make any size - that's why its so great! I'm quite tall and can never get the legs & sleeve lengths right off the shelf so its wonderful to have tailor made for a fraction of the cost!
- what is the usual timeframe to make things?
Most tailors can make simple garments in just a day or two but we generally give them a week and allow some extra days for alterations. As other posters have said if you can tell them that your departure date is a few days earlier to give you some time up your sleeve!
- is there are ballpark sort of cost for things?
- are there any recommendations for specific people in the Legian area?
We have always used Aristo at Merrys Collection in Legian. Not only is his work great but the prices he quotes are very reasonable and we have never had to negotiate at all.
Something else for you to consider is shoes ... I am a NZ size 11 and I can never get the shoes I would like here as they only have a limited selection in my size and they sell out quick! However in Bali when they are made to order its shoe heaven for me! Just like the clothes I print pictures off the internet and they make them for me. I've been paying around Rp200 - 250K for shoes and Rp 400K for boots. Just made sure they are reasonably tight as your feet tend to have swelled up a bit in Bali.
Enjoy!
Cheers
