We stayed 2 nights at the Bali Safari & Marine Park in a 2bedroom Kifaru room. It was our dearest accommodation, but our son's 14th birthday so worth the splurge. He'd spent his 10th birthday in Bali 4 years ago riding elephants at the park in Taro, so this seemed quite fitting. 2 days was worthwhile as you get more time to enjoy the facilities, especially that wonderful pool while watching the zebras and rhino wander behind you. I'd mentioned it was his birthday when booking, and they certainly made a fuss of him. The entrance to our room was decorated with black and white umbal umbal umbrellas and flags and we got a few more complementary inclusions than were mentioned at booking time. The biggest of these was an elephant ride for all 5 of us. We'd decided not to do it, as the cost was exorbitant (list price was $240 for the 5 of us), so to be handed the cards saying we had a ride each was a fantastic treat. We booked in for the last ride of the day, which was much better weather to be riding in. I also asked at check in if I could organise a birthday cake for dinner, and their response 'we have already organised for you'. They bought out a HUGE chocolate cake that night, which we couldn't finish so were offering to other diners.......and there was no charge for this, I was very impressed.
There's a performance of 'Hanuman the Hero' (the Ramayana story) at the park 3 times a week in the evening, quite an entertaining show involving plenty of elephants and dancers that goes for about an hour.
However, while we certainly enjoyed our time there, I wouldn't rush back. There's just not THAT much to do in the park itself, and you seem to be constantly opening your wallet for things that in many theme parks would be included. This constant extra charging really wore us down. Towards the end of the day we decided to grab an ice cream. Now in Kuta, a Magnum is about 9,000rph and it wasn't until kids had all pulled one out that we realised they were 28,000rph here......that's dearer than buying it at home! The charging for photos with the animals is erratic. We had a voucher each as part of our stay, which technically entitles 1 person to 1 photo. But if we wanted 1 photo of all 5 of us with 1 animal that would use all our vouchers, it really should be by the number of photos, not number of people. The orang-utan handlers were great, they took a few photos on our camera and only wanted 1 voucher, but the lion cub handlers would not have a bar of that, strictly 1 shot per person. There are also lots of other carnival type rides that have exorbitant charges for what they were (and hence, sat there empty most of the day). If you had smaller kids you'd want to avoid that area completely or be forever shelling out.
Part 4 for our next adventure - bike ride with Bali Budaya (Eco Tours) and onto Sanur.
