we have booked our own rooms before, direct with the Hotel, sometimes though it is cheaper to go through a wholesaler.
One trip we went to student flight centre and they arranged the rooms as a land only package and did it cheaper than we could do on the net.
We always look at the last minute sites, some go three months in advance, like wotif.com or last minute.
I guess it is like anything, have a good look, compare the prices.
