First check that your mobile phone is unlocked by trying out a few SIMs which are still in use. If your mobile phone works with these SIMs then it is unlocked. If you take this phone to Bali, you can buy a local SIM such as Mentari, Simpati etc. Ask the person selling you the SIM to set it up for you.

For example, I used a Mentari SIM. I paid Rp 400 to send an SMS to Australia and Rp 1,000 per minute to ring Australia, if I used the prefix 01016 then 61 for Australia.

If your current mobile is under a post paid plan, you can take it with you after you contact your mobile phone company to establish "roaming". With roaming, your phone functions the same as in Australia. Roaming is expensive as you pay to receive a call or SMS.

It is cheaper to ring back with the mobile using a local SIM.

The locals call mobile phones "HP" pronounced Har Pay.
