money exchange

Hi I am coming to Bali with my family for the first time at the end of September and have been told to check money carefully when exchanging because you will get ripped off so i thought i would change it before we come and now been told we are better off waiting till we get there. Do you get more for your money by exchanging in Bali? I'm a bit confused with the mixed advice we get from friends.
Also we are staying at the Jayakarta Any ones thoughts on the hotel?
