Wooden items are okay as long as there are no insects in them. You declare them and they are inspected (look for small holes in the wood with powder around them). If you go to the quarantine website it tells you what is alright. Spices can be problematic, especially saffron. No seeds and a lot of plant parts are banned. We bought a photo album that had leaves on the cover and that was confiscated because the leaves were water hyacinth. No turtle products or shells. As I said, the Quarantine website is pretty good and you can question anything you're not sure of. Last time we bought back orchid seedlings in bottles and I had already checked it out and printed out the pages of what was and wasn't allowed with these. When we got to customs I knew more about it than the customs officers and could provide them with the sheets telling what to look for. This made things a lot easier.
