would second eastern bali. from southern bali head to padang bai for a couple of days and enjoy the quieter area with snorkelling , move on to candi dasa- get a room away from the road- the traffic is getting really bad early morning and afternoon- again snorkelling is the go also a visit to Tenganan from here- hire a pushbike and ride to the village then do a walk through the terraces.
I love Amlampura but it is not everyones cup of tea- it is small city size with all facilities but NO TOURISTS!!! there is no major thing to see but a great place to be part of the life- here you will really notice the increase in the Muslim population- go to the local market early morning and soak up the atmosphere.
from here travel to Amed via Unjung and the coast road. Be careful if driving- though improved from years ago it is still a narrow windy hilly road. (great expererience a couple of weeks ago when I found a huge pothole much to the merriment of the local lads who almost fell of their scooters turning around to watch me!). Its about 40kms but stop at some of the small villages on the way and you will meet the most delightful people. (lots of new building work happening on temples etc so expect some big ceremonies coming up!)
From Amed travel through Abang- I stop there with friends but again nothing touristy-head down the hill to Tirtagannga and see one of the most spectacular rice terrace views in the whole of Bali.
Book into the guesthouse just outside Tirtagannga and spend 8000 per day to enter the palace and swim in the Sultans Pool with every local in the area. (They use the shower system daily then swim or vice versa). An enthusiastic group of locals have set up a bike riding tour opposite Tirtagannga which they are really proud of- give it a go they have some great trips on offer.
my idea of a perfect week or more-don't rush it take each day and find something special..
