so son and I flew out end of June for 5 weeks with friends and a bit of travel. daughter was to join us later. All well up to week 3 1/2. Daughter had been with us for 3 days when she became quite sick with a high fever ,aches and pains ,sore throat, cough etc.Two days later we were the same- felt worse than I had ever done.

So we were in village near Amplampura with local friends. They are worried, want us to go to hospital- local one has been upgraded and is looking quite good but I have had past experience with Bali hospitals and thought I would travel south to a major western clinic.
so took the kids and the car and drove at a steady pace feeling worse along the way- nearly had a connection with a truck but just avoided it.
So got to the clinic -temperature taken before entering and form completed- yes we had all the flu symptons.Didn't seem to matter-they ushered us through to the general waiting room anyway.
Finaly get in to see a doctor- temperatures had gone up again-yes we definatly had the symptons. What to do.

The doctor informed me that it looked like we did have the flu -could be swine-the cough seemedto indicate it was . If she took a swab and it showed up with any flu at all we would be isolated for five days while blood tests were done in Jakarta.

Her decision- she didn't want to inconvienience us (!!) so she would just give us some medication for the symptons and we should rest.

Friend arrived to drive us back as I had msged feeling worse. He took us home to village and we basically self isolated for five days not seeing friends and others until we were felling better.

My point in telling you all this is that there are potentially many people in Bali who have the flu like we did and even the supposedly good clinics are ignoring it so as not to affect tourism.

The effect on the Balinese may become quite significant as the wet season approaches which is when they are more likley to have low immune systems. So please like us if you get this sort of medical treatment and there is any chance of you having the flu , self isolate as best you can to limit its spread.

Oh yeah- because it was a Sunday clinic charged us top rate so all up my bill with medicine was $370 Aus !!
