Yes, I flew from KL to Bali in January this year without booking a particular seat online. When I went to the Check In at KL, I asked and was given a window seat, without any additional payment.
In the old days of the Great Malaysian Footrace, my 18 year old daughter came in useful. They allowed children to board first, including my daughter. Being a good 200 m runner, my daughter could sprint to the head of the pack and then bag the best seats by spreading out her clothes on the adjoining seats for her parents.
