An Australian man has been sentenced to eight months in an Indonesian prison for taking drugs in Bali.
Jason Scott McIntyre, from Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory, was arrested outside a bar in Kuta in the early hours of April 20 carrying about five grams of hashish.
McIntyre, 33, was initially charged with drug use and drug possession, a charge that carries a maximum of 10 years' prison.
But prosecutors later dropped the more serious charge and asked the Denpasar District Court to jail the Australian for just one year.
Chief judge Sigit Sutanto on Monday said McIntyre's actions had damaged Bali's image as a world tourist destination.
"(But) the defendant regrets what he did and has promised not to do it again," Sutanto said.
"He has a right to recover from his narcotics addiction."
Sutanto sentenced McIntyre to eight months in Bali's Kerobokan Prison, minus time already served.
McIntyre claims he has struggled with drug addiction for years.
"I promise God, my girlfriend and my family, no more," he told the court earlier this month.
