I watched a report on it a few nights ago one one of the current affairs shows. Cards that were skimmed in Australian cities were reproduced and used to withdraw US dollars in various American cities as well as in other countries. They spend a few days here skimming, then leave the country with the data to reproduce the cards and use them overseas.
My credit union called me a couple of months ago and told me someone had attempted to use my card in Indonesia but had two wrong PIN attempts. No money had been withdrawn from my account. As I had used the card an hour earlier close to home, it was flagged on their system. Card cancelled and a new one issued.
My card hadn't been used in Bali since September last year. While it could possibly have been skimmed then, it's more likely it was skimmed here and it's just coincidence that it was used (or attempted at least) in Indonesia.
