On one particular morning we were standing in the checkout queue, drooling onto our tray of selected goodies when we noticed a Para-military/Security Guard leaning on the nearby Information Desk with a seriously huge shotgun in his hands. You know the look on these dudes...."that's right, tourists, I'm seriously cool and very macho" He was actually escorting an Indonesian Business woman (with a briefcase strapped to her)who was also standing in our queue awaiting her turn to pay. Obviously she was very worried about getting her fruitty flans home in one piece.... Anyway, an Aussie Grandmother and her 20 something daughter standing behind us was agonizing over the effect her purchases would have on her waistline. I couldn't resist....
"Excuse me madam" I said, "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation. You are aware that in Indonesia they have legislation on conspicuous consumption of luxury food items? The gentleman over there at the Desk is from the Calorie Police. You may want to rethink the amount of pastry you have on your tray. ou might get off with a caution but do you really want to upset a guy with a gun that size?? She looked at me, looked at the guard, looked forlornly down at her tray and picked off several pastries from her tray of goodies AND DUMPED THEM ONTO A VACANT TRAY ON THE COUNTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to bite the sides of my mouth to not burst out laughing. Should have seen the supersillious look that the Indonesian Business woman gave me.......
