hiring a car is a great way to see bali as long as you are aware that traffic rules in bali are a bit sketchy the bigger the vehicle the more right of way you have.
We drove all over bali 2 years ago and had a great time, you will get lost even with good maps but that is part of the fun of driving yourself and often see things that others miss while trying to find out where you are, just remember that bali is not that big and getting lost is not a big issue.
Make sure you have an international driving licence before you go so you dont have problems with police
also if you do this go to a book shop and buy a periplus bali street atlus this is the most acurate set of maps you can get and lists most hotels as well
have a great trip and just remember to leave time to relax and do nothing as the heat in bali can really sap your strenth
