this is our experience: we stayed at the three brothers in amed last november and all we had to do was take six steps into the water and be swimming in amongst bright coral for a kilometere or more with even more colourful fish of various descriptions, some saw turtles, too.. no waves and slow current. great for our 7 and 8 year old. we just used our ordinary swimming pool goggles and stayed for 6 nights.
we were in padang bai a week later, the waves were too strong to snorkel, big rocks to be bashed into. we were back in padang bai two weeks ago and got to snorkel at blue lagoon: bleached coral, some interesting fish, but had to pick the right time to go in due to waves. one lady badly cut herself on the rocks when a wave bashed her in to shore. once the waves start, the sand comes up into the water making the water murky. apparently now is the windy season now in padang bai. so my experience was somewhat different to the other post. when the waves come right in, there is also no beach to sit on. for beautiful beach views, blue lagoon wins, but it is a very small beach (100m at the most, i would guess).
