Sept 11th, SARS, Georges 2 wars, birdflue and 2 Bali bombs held back rates for many years and gave punters a real bargain.
Funny thing is I can't recall posters during those years pushing for higher prices to give the guys a fair go.
Bali hotels are not high rise so cover a lot of expensive ground. They have to source and pump their own water, treat their own sewerage and cope with ridiculously high rates for power. Staff are lots cheaper but that's only one side of a complex equation.

The first time we came to Bali was in 1977 and stayed at the Natour Kuta beach hotel in a pretty basic beach room which cost USD 55.00.

If the prices in Bali get too high then people will vote with their feet and opt for all those cheap resorts in tropical Australia.

The facts however, show that this is the busiest year ever for Bali so obviously things haven't got to there yet.
