These little critters are the closest things to Humans for intelligence. Much smarter than any dog you have come across.
Anyone who has owned dogs would know they quickly work out who will tolerate what, and which people not to cross.
Monkeys are smarter and far more intuitve. Over years of observing us they catch onto what they can and can't get away with. They know the people to avoid (the locals) who will give them a fierce swipe or a tap with a stick to keep them in line. They quickly learn that the tourists (and they can pick them) are an easy touch.
My advice. If you're a timid person be bloody careful, stick close to a guide and don't flaunt food. If you have an air of authority about you and display dominance they're less likely to give you grief, but no guarantee.
They keep well clear of the guides because they know the consquences. Let some others go forward and watch what happens. Use your gut instinct. We've been to interact with them numerous times in Bali and Thailand. Never had a problem, but we don't do anything foolish.
Good luck and don't avoid it. It is an amazing experience. Just use your noggin.
Jim.
