I don't think it's very realistic or compassionate to deal in moral absolutes. No one likes being stolen from, and the OP certainly dealt with it very reasonably, but this is what happens when you flaunt your wealth in front of people with very little. SOME of them are going to be tempted to do the wrong thing.
And I certainly don't think the fact that the odd Balinese person steals means that Balinese people cannot be trusted to look after children. No Australian babysitter has lavished my children with the constant attention and kindness that our Balinese babysitter does!
