If you payed by visa for the first time it directs you to a Visa confirm and protection site when you press "pay now". If you closed this page(there is no way out of it other than to close it) the payment would not have gone through. There is a link on the visa protection site that lets you "Skip this option" and forwards payment.

Go back into their website and sign up as a member(only takes a min)that way you can log in as a member and check to see if your flights have been booked and paid for. this will save the confusion of maybe paying twice .

Also depending what virus software you are using AA email may come up as possible virus alert.

But you should have got the itinerary page displayed on your screen as soon as you paid.
