You will see many tourists and ex pats driving around with no problems whatsoever.
The speeds are generally slow, and once clear of the manic south, country and rural driving is a breeze.
You can hire a Bali Navigator to make life easier and find points of interest.
The advantages of self drive are obvious, as you have independence to up and go when you feel like it, and also the cost advantages are there.
A decent sizeable car (Avanza / Xenia) would be around 180 - 200k per day.
Leave conventional road rules behind, as in Bali they do not apply.
Keep a steady line, with no abrupt side to side movements, concentrate solely on whats up front and not what's behind, and remember that biggest has right of way in all circumstances.
The car seat thing is another issue, and perhaps there will be a hire option with baby seat if you shop around.
Remember your international licence, and ask for insurance excess to be reduced to around $100 from the standard USD1000......just in case.
