On my first day here this time I was walking along Sanur beachfront and I saw a cat on its back, eyes glazed and tongue hanging out. Its belly was sliced open and a woman was fishing around inside it. No, not a new restaurant but a vet...she was spaying it. A dog was in the same state in the back of a van and another cat at the back. The drip lines were all over the place. I lingered awhile and talked to them while they worked. Always wanted to be a vet but my father wouldnt let me go to Aus to train as in those days there was no vet school in NZ.
These vets are trained by Aus and NZ vets and entirely funded by donations so that is some thing to consider. They are travelling around desexing the street animals. They had two catchers "must be skinny and fast. Boys with fat bellies are no good, too slow." A group of street dogs were hovering around, barking anxiously, "already done."
A few days later I see an ad in Bali Advertiser. The animal shelter wants donations and volunteers so I ring. Rabies vaccination can be arranged purely as a precaution and they will call me back about giving them a day or two of my holiday.I will let you know what happens, and I will do this for the little dog I saw at the Water Palace limping around on a broken leg, piteously skinny and hungry. My Darwin dog will get a reminder of how lucky he is when I get home...
BAWA is the organisation and the shelter is in Ubud.
