and learning to love cask wine! Not going to name every place we ate at, mainly because I didn't look at their names but thought a special mention(good and bad) was appropriate for a few of them. TJ's was at best disappointing and certainly not worth the prices it charges. The jug of Margarita was watery and I suspect had very little alcohol content. I did get a 'brain freeze' while drinking it which gave me a rip roaring headache for 30 seconds! It's surviving on a dim reputation of times past! Poco Loco isn't much better with the same strange little lady wandering around with the empty tequila bottle in her pocket, doing the same corny tricks. She has been there forever (and it shows) The food was marginally better than TJ's. but most people there seemed to be having a good time which is what its really all about! Kuta Steakhouse: I felt like I had walked into the set of Puberty Blues when I entered this place full of expat older surfies escaping Aussie. It's just a few meters from KTH and we had the funniest night here. The steaks were surprisingly good and very cheap. The wine list was basically non existent except for the cask of DeBortoli red. The first glass was revolting as it was kept in the fridge, but amazingly by the 10th (or so) glass it tasted like nectar and I think we ended up finishing it. Certainly a good argument for expensive versus cheap wines. Unfortunately it shuts at 11pm and that means 'all out'. We ate there a couple of times as it's so convenient to KTH. The little Thai place (Tom Yum, I think) next to the Kuta Steakhouse was uninspiring to look at and had only a few tables for patrons, but what a surprise! We had a great meal here and it cost us around $5 each. Beautiful green Thai chicken curry and spring rolls. We took a good bottle of red (from Carrefour) and they were happy for us to drink it there. Jazz Café in Ubud provided us with a delightful meal and terrific music from the Bali Blues Brothers and we met the most amazing American named Donald, who joined us for dinner and shared some of his travel experiences with us. He is one of life's true self-actualizers! Special mention about the toilets here as they were clean and peaceful with ferns and murals. Massimo's in Sanur was again an interesting experience. The service was very slow to start but improved after we ordered a bottle of wine each. (Well I like red and L likes white!) My meal was really good with mushroom on bruscetta covered with cheese entrée and the basil pesto gnocchi for main. Prices were a bit more than most places but reasonable by Australian standards. The toilets were dirty here! We had brekkie one day at Ocean Blue on the beach at Legion and thought it lovely. Good coffee and atmosphere. Cheap! And lastly we had a 'love bucket' each at the dynasty while visiting staff we knew. There were great and as it was happy hour they were affordable. But the dynasty is like visiting 'wet & wild' now and alas it won't be a holiday destination for me again. Realistically those little cheap eating places provide just as good a meal as the named restaurants, for a fraction of the cost and often more interesting customers!
