It's pretty well THE busiest time of the year. Hotels involved in package deals can & do charge like the proverbial wounded bull at peak times. Other hotels not affiliated with Travel Agents or Airlines may well be much cheaper. Do look at Asia Rooms (had a few dealings with them lately & VERY pleased).
I got back from Bali last night. Cheap/reasonably priced hotels like La Walon & Masa Inn (which are not involved in package deals) in & around Poppies 1 & 2 are fully booked for several months. Ditto many others of varying standards in the area. I was lucky to get a twin room for a week for self & son in early November - couldn't get 2 rooms. Masa charges Rp200K/single, LaWalon around Rp 280/single, probably more expensive in August.
You could always look on ebay & bid for something. Had 2 great experiences in the last few weeks with ebay purchases - JBR coming.
