If you want to do it on the cheap, think about staying at some of the smaller hotels or even a budget villa, like the Kuta Royal Villas. If you can sit through a time share presentation, there are some real bargains available too!

By flying from Melbourne via Adelaide on some super-cheap Pacific Blue fares I picked up, and staying in self-catering (but nice) accommodation, I have managed to book a two-week trip for a family of four in August for under $2,000.

I think it can still be done very cheaply if you are flexible with dates and open minded about accommodation.
