With the amount of Australians applying for visas here in Australia and also on arrival in Bali, it is just not possible to run a backround check on all the travelers. Add to that all the other nationalities coming through the airport at Ngurah Rai and you have an almost impossible task for Indonesian Immigration because I don't believe Australian police or any other country, are going to give instant and direct access to Australian citizens personal history, criminal or otherwise.. At the very least Indonesian embassies or consulates would have to apply or go through some process to find information and that would take a lot longer than a four day turn around or the time it takes to stand in line at Denpasar.
I'm sure if there was a particular murderer, rapist or other "most wanted" individual, Australia would notify Indonesian embassies to watch out for their appearance, but other than that, they just don't know.
These are just my opinions and don't take them as fact.
Cheers
