I liked Phuket better than Bali, but hubby and kids liked Bali, I could go back to either, and we are heading back to Bali in September.
I agree Patong can be very seedy.
We had the best day trip ever in Phuket, a day trip in canoes through caves which was expensive but world class and fabulous, so that left me with special memories, and we stayed somewhere a bit more upmarket in Phuket so that makes me remember it fondly as well. I found the food was a bit dearer than Bali, but we also had some fabulously cheap meals in Phuket.
I think they are both great places for different reasons and a lot depends on where you stay and what day trips etc that you do.
Our return trip to Bali will be our first trip without the kids, so I am expecting to have a different Bali experience this time, a bit more laid back and relaxing, so who knows after this trip I may never want to go anywhere else!
I say if you get the chance to do either go for it!!!
