I would fly Melb-KL - $442 return
Then KL-Bali - $140 return
Just leave yourself a bit extra time for the Kl-Bali flight and return to allow for delays. KL-Bali have 5 flights per day.
Still a good price @ $582 return, just a bit of mucking around.
Prefer Perth-Bali - 3.5 hours!!
