You need to arrange a 211 social visa which needs an Indonesian sponsor, some agents will assist you with that. Perhaps make enquiries on balipod.com as to a suitable agent.

Not sure what your budget is like and what your idea of 'cheap' is for a rental, one option is find a nice homestay and negotiate a long term rate. That gives you a few more options, and maybe you can live in more than one place over the 6 months. Often once you get to know a few people around the place you hear of places for rent. If you are only there for 6 months, you don't want to have to buy household items, so wherever you stay has to have what you need.

As you know, eating out is very cheap - especially if you eat local food (and I don't mean "tourist" warungs - I mean the places where locals eat), so you mostly don't need a kitchen, maybe just a small fridge to keep fruit and snacks.

Think about getting your motorbike license so you can get around.

Be prepared to be outside your comfort zone and to be open to new experiences. If you have the opportunity to do it, then I say go for it.

End of the day, if it is not what you expected or you are not enjoying it, you can always leave.
