Sorry, Luke, but I don't have a list of Balinese-owned, smaller hotels. Maybe you could start a forum discussion asking for places in the area/s where you like to stay in your price range.

If you have time, it's fun googling for hotels mentioned in JBRs that you haven't heard of before & appeal to you. The online booking agencies have a lot of the smaller hotels on their sites - again, just ask or search the archives here for reviews.

I am on a tight budget so I like Masa Inn & LaWalon in Poppies 1. Further afield at any price (altho it's very cheap) Pacung Indah is spectacular with wonderful hosts, excellent foot &, as they say - a view to dine for and if you join BaliChatForum - a lovely site - you get 50% off.
