we loved tirta gangga for its water palace and the beautiful walks in the area. amlapura has two palaces that the kids loved. we stayed three or four days. the kids were 7 and 8 at the time. however: we were not too happy with the quality of the water in the swimming pools and beware that the bottom is extremely slippery. the water palace is particularly fun because it is a tourist attraction for indonesians and they love to have a chat. going there on a weekend makes it doubly so.
when we went on our walks we didn't take a guide and had a super time. we just chose a different direction each day, going along irrigation channels, ricefields, paths and quiet roads. we even got to see 2 pet porcupines when invited into someone's yard on a walk. amlapura is a quick and easy bemo ride away. it has a hardies, an atm, a swimming pool next to hardies, a market and the palaces. they are opposite one another. one is restored and the other run down. the kids loved them. i've left my address open for anyone who wants any extra info, tips.
