in May. We were in Room 211 and were around the corner from the main Reception. It was far enough from the renos to be pretty quiet. We found the room really close to the amenities we wanted. We liked the location so much that when we were offered a move (they had us booked into a twin bed room for our 10th wedding anniversary holiday - that is another story) we declined.
You have to go down a set of reasonable steps to brekky and the pool level, but the front drive is quite steep. Once you negotiate that it is an easy walk to Mata Haris etc. The footpaths are fairly even and traffic easy to cross (I notice these things for dealing with toddlers and pushing a pram!) While we were there I noticed there were actually quite a few Grey Nomads at this hotel - they obviously all had the same idea as you about the location.
The hotel itself was quite tired. But the location was fantastic. So easy just to dash out quickly and get a coffee over the road if you felt like it. And not too far to carry heavy shopping!!
