Some airlines have cut of times for check in and if you do not check in by then, you are not allowed to join the flight.
As a child my grandparents used to take me to piano exams. They said they always allowed time to change a flat tyre on the way. This meant we were often VERY early, but guess what? I NEVER felt strssed about running late and NEVER missed an exam! (I consequently gave up learning the piano, but that is another story)
Airports are boring places, but an early arrival usually means you have more say in where you sit on the plane.
