My wife and I and friends have stayed in Candi Dasa maybe a dozen times at different hotels. You can stay right in town or out a little bit and yes it is a small place but a great place to relax with the kids and go to the places you mentioned. There are also a few good restaurants. We always like the Rama Candi Dasa hotel. Most all the hotels will have transport into the town if you stay out a little. Really it is only a five minute drive into town from anywhere you stay.
Just Google Candi Dasa and you will see a lot of places to stay.
One thing of all the times we have stayed there we have never come across any savage dogs and have never had a boring time.
