In Webster, barter is offered as a synonym to bargain. That does not mean it means the same thing, a synonym is a word with a similar meaning, not exactly the same.
If you look up barter you will see that the meaning is generally related to transactions where no money is exchanged - i.e. an exchange of goods and services.
