This is a difficult idea to get across, but I will try.
We do need to be responsible in how we assist the poor in Bali, and other areas of Indonesia frequented by tourists.
Rich (by comparison) tourists handing out toys and money can have a negative impact. If you don't understand why this may have a negative impact I suggest you discuss it with charity workers.
It is important that the children also get a chance to interact with foreign visitors in a way that doesn't involved receiving gifts.
I am NOT saying not to assist - please, please do.
However, begging should not be encouraged. It is demeening, and often children are exploited by adults.
Similarly, if at all possible, try to contact any NGO's or charities working with the poor in these areas so that your contribution can be well managed, and perhaps discreet. Your money could be targetted toward much needed clean water or other community needs.
