Just thought I'd post about our recent "win" with Qantas...our trip was booked on ff points with Qantas (due to fly out next Saturday), then Jetstar released cheap flights...we were keen to extend our stay so we decided to book and pay for earlier flights with Jetstar and possibly forego 5000 points each in cancelled flights (a family of four). We got the flights Pth to Denpasar for $1700 in total with jetstar then rang Qantas to cancel the first leg of our flight (which was a Jetstar flight anyway)... turns out, it's only a change not a cancellation so we got penalised 2500 points each instead, plus we got a refund on the taxes etc from the Pth-DPS flight and a refund on the difference between the old charges and the current charges/taxes.... $800 refund in total thanks very much!!! If you have the chance to make a minor change to your flights then it's likely you can get a refund on the taxes and charges you paid... go for it!
