It is easier to take cash, you can change your pounds easily at a reputable money changer like Kodak shops or there are quite a few banks in Kuta. You can also keep a check on the daily rate this way also.
Make sure your currency is in good conditions, no marks or stamps on them, no bits missing, then just change about about 100 pounds at a time, that will last for quite a while and you will get a big bundle of rupiahs for that.
The better hotel have safety deposit boxes at reception or in your room, leave your passport, cash etc there for safety. Have a good holiday.
