There are a few ways to get there. The cheaper, the more painful.
You could take the fast boat from Benoa to Gili Trawangan and return. The boat takes 2-2.5 hours each way and costs approx. Rp1,000,025 per head return. This is the price I got in January. I bought the ticket from a tourist booth near the Melasti Beach Resort, but there are tourist booths everywhere in Kuta/Legian. You could also take the ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar in Lombok then get transport to Bangsal then the boat accross to the Gilis, this is very cheap to do, but the ferry takes 5 hours and the boat is filthy.
When you get there just go for a walk and negotiate prices as you go. I have been 4 times and have always got accom at a good price, even in the high season.
