20 years ago with our three year old, and last May, just the two of us. The steps are not a problem unless you're very unfit, have a disability or, possibly, more than one child. It's a good 20 minute walk to central Ubud, mostly uphill, and an 8yo would likely lose interest soon after the bridge. The shuttle's frequency is less than ideal but transport is easily available and negotiation not a big deal once you discover the usual price (harga biasa). Beceth's info is pretty correct. The thing about the Tjampuhan is that it has a certain magic, nestled in its gorgeous gardens with the river rushing below and an important temple on the other side, at the rivers' confluence. We were glad we stayed there both times but last time, in November, we sated at Alam Indah, also a little way out of town, but with a better shuttle service and its own kind of magic. We'll stay at Alam Indah again.
