When i sponsored my husband for his first holiday 5 years ago i had 100 dollars a day to cover him for the time he stayed, also i paid for health insurance, it probably has changed since then and we never used a 100 dollars a day, but it satisfied the consulate, also they take in account what my salary was, so between my savings and my salary it was ok, best of luck and dont get daunted with the paperwork , it is not that bad hope you are successful and your friend enjoys the time in aussie, cheers sury
