if you go to the $2 shops there a usually heaps of lightweight party favor things you can buy such as packs of rings / badges / mini yoyo's / party masks - cardboard variety / water balloons /strings of necklaces. In Big W I have seen large packs of assorted party favors around 50 to a pack - themes like pirates or princess etc. There is always packs of small plastic Australian flags, pens, pencils & keyrings, deck of cards and most are only $2 - $3.

Another option if you or your kids enjoy craft type things is to make a necklace or braclet. Many shops $2, spotlight etc have packs that you can buy the leather straps and an assortment of beads & clips to make up your own unique gifts. Very cheap to do and also can occupy the kids before and during your trip.
