In 1975, some of the resturants did not have electricity such as Mamas Restaurant, hence no fridges or proper lighting.
Going to Mamas Restaurant for a vegetarian smorgasbord at night lit only by a weak kerosine lamp was an exercise in guesswork. I was never sure what I was putting on my plate.
Hygiene was always a problem, hence the term "Bali Belly". Garbage disposal was achieved by piling rubbish against the wall and letting the pigs rummage through it.
In February this year, I actually saw two health inspectors actually go through a resturant in Poppies 2 Lane swabbing knives and checking the temperature of meat stored in a fridge.
Kuta is obviously ruined. It is nothing like it was in the good old days.
