My initial contact with Bali was in Legian Kaja in '83. I fell in love with the quiet walk down to check the surf along the tree lined gangs dotted with sleepy warungs. Right On the beach under a large banyan trees was the Sunset cafe, the beach track petered out at the legian in one direction and jalan 66 in the other. There were rice fields, coconut groves with cows and temples scattered everywhere.

We used to think of a visit to the the Poppies gangs as we would a visit to King's Cross in Sydney.

But as Legian was slowly concreted over we fled to Poppies 1. At first as just somewhere convenient, but I have to say its slowly grown on me. Now I look forward to staying there. If there was good uncrowded surf out the front I'd be happy to stay there permanently (well, maybe a long time anyway), but now alas, Kuta is just a stopover on the way to other places in Indonesia.
