The consensus is that most places will allow this, sometimes at a small fee, and sometimes happy as long as you are spending money.
I think it's OK as long as it's a large pool, and resident guests are not deprived of pool bar space or lounger space, or are subjected to "pool rage" behaviour by non residents.
Some places specialise in open pool allowance, the Hard Rock probably being the most well known.
