Not knowing how much he would spend because he didn't know how much he'd buy or how far he'd travel or drink or eat or whatever he first decided how much he could afford to spend. He then divided this into roughly thirds - one third in cash, one third in a new card account and one third in Traveller's Cheques as a last resort. (You can see I had some influence on him.)
Then he put the rest of his ready finance into his everyday Visa credit account and hid it in his dirty jocks bag for the unforseeable and emergencies. I thought it should be safe there too.
As it turned out he came home with very little left in his TC's and the Visa untouched but, if he'd found the bargain of a lifetime he had the resources to buy it if he wanted.
A clever solution I thought.
