I've always put sunglasses, hat, earrings etc away safely in a bag before getting out of the car and never had any trouble with the monkeys there. I've had camera or video camera with me and no worries there. No monkeys ever jumped on me, or even approached me, but I don't buy anything to feed them either and try to stay pretty aware of what they're doing as I pass them.
A few years back I went there with my parents. Mum was feeling a bit off colour, so she sat in the main courtyard type area while dad and I explored. She was talking to an older lady who was sitting near her and had her glasses on - she needed them just to see where she was going. A monkey raced up behind her and grabbed them and ran. One of the local guides working there chased the monkey but never got the glasses back. Poor bugger fell up some steps and gashed his leg in the chase too. They came back to her with a big box full of glasses to see if she could find any that would suit her - since she couldn't see anything without them.
