When I was taken there by a local guide/driver he was handed a stick by another guide who was leaving. Everywhere we went my guide would tap the stick on the ground or against a wall whenever a monkey got too close. They would back off immediately - not without giving a snarl or baring fangs though. If I moved closer to a rock wall for a better photo shot my guy would stop me and tap the top of the wall first - apparantly the monkeys often sit below the walls on the seaward side to ambush unsuspecting tourists. We never had any trouble but I saw plenty of tourists who did.
