I have also known our friends to be very shy. Our driver usually will only eat Nasi Goreng if we invite him to lunch. He said that it is ordered because it is inexpensive!
I would still prefer to ask them where they would like to go. It may be a place that they have always wanted to eat at, or alternatively a place where they feel comfortable.
It's one of those issues where you have to trust your instincts and anything given with a pure heart is always appreciated.
