Had waist length extensions done a few years ago for a wedding and then went on a trip to China.
They basically braid your hair horizontally and then them sew them into the braid (and glue a little, sometimes). Not heavy or hot, although they hurt like hell the first day or two because the braids need to be tight. Also they look best if you have a hot iron to straighten them and make them blend in with your hair--hard to do in humid weather.
Looked great, but not ideal while traveling. I waited a little too long to get them out and it took hours for my hair expert to detangle. Broke a lot of my ends underneath, so I had to cut it very short.
