Is Bali less safe for an American citizen than it is for other foreigners? I don't know.

1) If you haven't done it already, register your travel details online with the U.S. Department of State
https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/

2) Get travel insurance

3) E-mail your parents every day you're in Bali, and don't miss one day. Internet cafes are everywhere

4) Tell your parents about the above arrangements.

You're a long way from home, they've seen the travel warnings, it's natural they are worried.
I have a friend who also thought she might be singled out in Bali because she is American. She did get singled out - As soon as shopkeepers heard her accent she paid more than I when we went shopping.
Have a fantastic time in Bali ackmra :)
