Don't store them in carry-on luggage. Mine was deemed to be dangerous enough to use as a weapon(!) and confiscated when I forgot to transfer it to my suitcase at the airport. Also,if you are weighing a case by yourself and can't read the dial because you are standing above it, you can slide your thumbnail to where the metal gauge is, then release the case and read the line by your thumbnail (or if your scale is digital you can stand in front of a mirror and read the reflection). On a side note, I always take a half-used roll of duct tape with me as it is good for binding up bags that are close to bursting at the seams, or have already, to be sure everything comes back in one piece. If using a stripey lightweight throwaway bag I also fit one bag inside another and zip each in turn and add a binding of duct tape all the way around.
